Procedural Hearing To Take Place on Monday 7 September.

The Omagh Bombing Inquiry will hold a procedural hearing in Belfast, from Monday 7 September. If needed, the hearing will continue through to Thursday 10 September, although it is expected that the hearing will conclude earlier. 

Proceedings will begin at 10.00am each day.  

This is a procedural hearing. No witnesses will be called, and no evidence will be heard. The hearing will consider legal and procedural matters. 

The hearing will focus on two issues relating to: 

  1. The legal principles for Closed Material Restriction Orders (‘CMROs’), pursuant to section 19 of the Inquiries Act 2005 and submissions on applications for CMROs by His Majesty’s Government, PSNI and Counter-Terrorism Policing. 
  2. A hearing, conducted on a purely hypothetical basis, to consider issues relating to the Investigatory Powers Act, in particular the legal prohibition set out in section 56 and schedule 3 of that Act

How to watch the hearing  

The Hearing will take place in the Inquiry’s Hearing Centre in 1 Bradford Court, Belfast, BT8 6RB.

The hearing will be streamed via the Inquiry’s YouTube Channel, on a delay, for those who wish to watch the proceedings online and updates will be shared on the Inquiry’s X feed.

Omagh Viewing Room  

In addition to the Hearing Room in Bradford Court, a remote viewing space is available for anyone who wishes to watch the hearings from Omagh, subject to restrictions.    

The proceedings of the hearing will be broadcast to a public viewing space in the Station Centre, 17 James St, Omagh BT78 1QX. This facility is open to anyone who wishes to attend and you do not need to register in advance.  

Notes to editor 

This procedural hearing is separate to the evidential Chapter Three hearings scheduled to commence from the 21 September.
